Accomplishments of Leopold II
Severe Illusion
DSBP 1069
CD from DSBP (USA)
|
Dark electro / harsh industrial, clanky percussions and dance-floor tracks combine here for a very interesting and hard driving set of tunes! Ulf and Fredrik have definitely grown on this album from their "D.I.R.E." release in 2003. You can hear a signature sound forming here, and a good amount of new sounds and style on this disc. 17 tracks and a full 74+ minutes of classic, powerful, and raging electronics!

Harmonic Colour Fields
Warren Burt
Pogus 21028
CD from Pogus (USA)
|
"Harmonic Colour Fields is a set of five computer pieces which explore static microtonal harmonic fields. This means that once a piece begins, harmonically, it's going to stay pretty much the same for it's entire duration. The pieces are descended from the 1970s "drone" pieces of such composers as La Monte Young, Charlemagne Palestine, Hal Budd, and myself, but they make greater use of slow harmonic progressions to make more varied musical surfaces. I wanted to make pieces where the quality of the harmony was the primary focus, and so used very simple rhythms, plain electronic timbres, and a minimum of melodic structuring. In fact, in these pieces, any sense of melody is simply the result of how the harmonic material is articulated. MoreDetails => http://www.pogus.com/21028.html

Clara Nostra
If, Bwana (Al Margolis)
Pogus 21019
CD from Pogus (USA)
|
The rumbling continued. Matt slowly opened his eyes, then getting out of bed (hopefully remembering to put on some underwear) wandered into the common area of the loft. &qout; What the !@#$%^&*() is that!&qout; "Clara Nostra" Matt (his roommate and not his deranged alter ego/split personality) replied. "That tells me alot." "New If, Bwana disc" Matt blurts out, somewhat embarrassed by his obvious poor taste in listening habits (not to mention his rather lax attention to personal hygiene). "Well that does explain a lot," Matt says as he heads back to his room. "No wonder it doesn't go anywhere. Kind of annoying isn't it?" Matt looked at Matt just before Matt disappeared out of sight. "I like it." Al says "If 62 minutes of 156,000 clarinets rumbling and grumbling slowly through your speakers with no destination home is for you, well you're home. On the other hand if that sounds like something to drive you up a wall, well, be seeing you."

Frogs
Grundik+Slava
TP004 / AU009
CD from TOPHETH PROPHET (Israel)
|
"The Frogs" is our most recent project. It is the second installment in the "Fauna" series coming step after "...for electronics and birds" (Stateart). As it says in the title this album is dedicated to the frogs and represent our collaboration with singer Victoria Hanna. We met Victoria, amazing vocal artist from Jerusalem, a couple of years ago and from the very first time it was obvious for us that we'll do something together. We played several concerts of chants vs. electronics in Israel and USA. One day Victoria sent us a tape with her vocal improvisations that she has recorded using some of our casual live recordings as a playback. She wrote: "Do with that what ever you want". So we did. A SHIELD OF DEFENSE AND THE WORD OF THE SON OF BLOOD
BARZEL
TP003
CD from TOPHETH PROPHET (Israel)
|
The 9 tracks here (plus a short intro blurt) blast through 48 minutes filled with burning oil and billowing smoke. As one would hope from the byline, the focus here is on martial music based around heavy industry and themes of racial / religious pride. Lyrically the tracks are crammed with historical references to the birth of Israel, go words like "honour" and "Zionism" and the same sort of creepy hate fueled fanaticism that drives both the JDL and WAR alike. Still, there is less focus on the "other" and more on self agrandizment, militant empowerment and nationalism.

TEL-AVIV AFTERMATH
V.A.
TP001
CD from TOPHETH PROPHET (Israel)
|
A showcase for new music from Israel, Tel Aviv Aftermath is a mixed bag of noise, industrial, electronic and avant-garde music which, although at times it wallows in self-indulgence, at others has the power to intrigue and to captivate. The minute's silence "for the memory of all those who violently lost their lives in the Middle East conflict, except those who took other lives while losing theirs" would be the collection's low point, were it not succeeded by an utterly dreadful seventeen minute live improvisation by an underground supergroup calling themselves The Crossfishes.

Mostly influenced by Nurse With Wound, Illusion Of Safety and Hirsche Nicht Aufs Sofa’ surrealist collages, and the unique atmospheres of Zoviet France, The Hafler Trio, Whitehouse, Coil's albums. Bands characterised by an unlimited freedom of creation.Demange Machine uniqueness rests on in the simplicity and essence of the elements.Emotions are not considered here at all - they are replaced by sensorial stimulation. restricted to there very essence, this is a timeless album, arising from a blinding, arrhythmic labyrinth of beauty. Demange Machine’s work is thus a reflection of our lives in turns beautiful or monstrous, but always complex , paradoxical. This new album comes in a luxurious 12 pages booklet packaging, limited and numbered - 300 copies edition.)

O.T.X
Brume 11
CD from Brume Records (France)
|
O.T.X is a much talented 26-year-old Anglo-Italian composer whose first album "Escape" -original, mature and really efficient- O.T.X is a highly explosive encounter between different musical trends like industrial, dark ambient, trance and drum'n'bass… With "Escape", O.T.X manages to create a multitude of disquieting virtual worlds, where the listener may endlessly get lost... The album, including excellent remixes by Oil 10 and Displacer and a video for "Weapons Factory" by Stephane Berla, is a kind of musical experiment that may forecast a new era for dark ambient electronica… [ Official Site => http://www.o-t-x.com/] |

Itching
Zonk't
Brume 09
CD from Brume Records (France)
|
With "Itching", Zonk't preserves his "touch" : relentless groove, a low and hypnotic bass, often a complex rhythmic architecture getting close to electronic industrial dub. Much more direct tracks, less dark but always very nocturnal where the laptop electronica takes over. One would think of click and cuts minimalist movement; not only with the microscopic precision of the rhythmic compositions, but also with its work on the sound and of its spatialization, but escapes its hermetism and offers a much more sensual version. One thinks of Plastikman after a training course with Techno Animal, Scorn or Pan Sonic.Including 2 remixes by Flint Glass and Oil 10.Inventive, modern and rich, "Itching" should stand out as one of this year's best surprise. |

Flint Glass
Brume 03
CD from Brume Records (France)
|
Flint Glass, with his first release "Hierakonpolis", appears already in the foreground of finest electronica.Like an architect who built up his constructions in different layers and channels, Flint Glass works with this method by using only sampling tools. This is a unique and vast collection of sounds, ranging from catchy melodies and samples mercilessly interrupted by distorted beats. The cold polyrhythmic drumcodes are bet into a melted ambiance of different experimentations. It's the warm timbre of this dark ambient recording which creates its own unique sonic profile.Included : 5 remixs by famous artists like Oil 10, Dither, Cdrk(Ammo, Xingu Hill, Axiome), Hiv+ and Komintern. SHS005
CD from SELEKTION (Frankfult/Germany)

Synapses is an instrumental device of combined string instruments (acoustic and electric guitars, detuned piano, spinett-vina, hurdy-gurdy and cello), percussion instruments and metal resonnators --all interconnected with double-bass-, cello- and guitar strings. When one string is played the resulting sound or movement is transfered by the connected strings to the next resonator. Thus one action causes several sound events. In fact, it's impossible to touch one element of the system without getting response of the whole device. Synapses is an hanging sensible network... " |

Phroq
CD01
CD from Shiver Sounds Records (Switzerland)
|
...after have released many records on various labels all around the world, here’s his first cd on his own label “shiver sounds records”, a strange and fascinating cd, a total confusion of sounds and senses. For this new album, Francisco Meirino/phroq works on a new side a new way of his music, more quiet, more technic, a release very dense, a beautiful but difficult disc. Precise soundscapes, sheer intense noise attacks, a meticulous work on intensity and dynamic. Using a strange technic of contact microphones, metal wires and beer cans, phroq explores a new sound universe, a serious work (by the form and will) but also a funny way (by technic) of the experimental electro-acoustic and noise music.<<(from http://www.phroq.com ) |

ARTS 8104 2
CD from from ARTIST-CD(WERGO) (GERMANY)
|
In 2001 Johannes S. Sistermanns stayed in Japan for four months (Artist Fellowship The Japan Foundation). With this third stay in Japan since 1997 he developed the electric tea ceremony. This modern tea ceremony, based on the traditional one, takes into account the varying types of beverage dispensers set up every 70 till 100 metres in the streets of Japanese cities. They are in daily use and dispense, among other things, hot green tea in cans. Recordings of sounds of/in these vending machines as well as sound-sources in locations where this new tea ceremony takes place in a modern social context are as much part of etc_random as are the exploitation of sounds of "traditional" sources like tea bowls, -tins and -water. Kazuya Ishigami intervenes live in the performance with sounds and computersamplings. "The tea-can is also listening", so Sistermanns’ statement, when he stimulates the empty tea can into listening by placing contact microphones into it and so recording the resonances of shopping turmoil. etc_random as a digital sound performance is performed randomly through pushing the random button after start. The 55 pieces are composed but not the sequence of the 55 pieces. |

It is solely created by manipulations and effects achieved through the use of a simple bass guitar. This debut studio album is an uncompromised, uninhibited, harsh, challenging, and intensely satisfying dose of music. You better love 'em or leave 'em alone.(from http://www.oppositerecords.com/) |

KK NULL
CD from Opposite Records (USA)
|
One of the finest works of KK Null's career, he modestly calls this "high-quality cosmic noise." A fierce expression of Nulltronics created without synthesizers, guitar, or computers. I say it brings to mind radio transmissions from other planets and electrical storms being shaped by KK's hand. Intensely trance-inducing.(from http://www.oppositerecords.com/) |

Popular music doesn’t have to be boring. Experimental music doesn’t have to be unlistenable. Poprekordt is German producer Jochen Gutsch's third CD release under the Hinterlandt guise following Sitting, Going Places (2003 CD on Abflug Records, Helsinki/Finland), T(Raumdeutung) (2003 CD-R on CUE Records, Osaka/Japan) and a number of web-only releases on labels such as Stasisfield (US) and Earlabs (NL). It’s the first Hinterlandt release on German label Dhyana Records and marks a strong development from the aforementioned efforts. As the name suggests, Poprekordt displays popular music, however does not abandon the experimental approach on composition that Hinterlandt stands for. The most obvious referral to pop is the use of melodic vocals and "real instruments" (guitar, bass, vintage drum machines, etc.) alongside the trademark Hinterlandt digital trickery of beats, field recordings and sound-art aesthetics. The strongest link to experimental music is the format, with each of the songs undergoing various kinds of dynamic transformations and clocking in at 13-17 minutes. Whilst Poprekordt was performed, recorded and mixed entirely by Jochen Gutsch in Sydney/Australia, it‘s the third track’s guest vocals from Emanuela De Angelis of Italian post-digital sound-art duo Mou, Lips! and the mastering skills of Casey Rice (best known for his work as sound-man for Tortoise and producer of Isotope 217, Via Tania, Liz Phair, etc.) that make the record unfold in all it’s subtlety. Poprekordt is the first Hinterlandt record that utilises today‘s cutting edge electronic ways of composition and at the same time sees Jochen drawing from his long experience playing and writing music in underground rock bands such as Buckethead, Suckspeed, Feedback Recycling, Professor to name but a few. Taking clues from 70s Kraut-Rock, 80s Elektro, 90s Post-Rock and OOs Laptop, this record will sit nicely between artists as diverse as Talk Talk, Gastr Del Sol, Neu!, Hrvatski, The Notwist, Can, Matmos, and - of course - Kraftwerk. And, it’s plain enjoyable. (from http://www.dhyanarecords.com/) www.hinterlandt.com |
