matt borghi
re34
CD-R(2004) from Retinascan
|
Matt Borghi from around Detroit, Michigan is a gifted artist in many ways. Besides his musical output, driven by electronics and his eclectic guitar play and put out on quite a few different labels around the globe, he also is doing very inspiring photographs and texts. You can overlook his work at www.mattborghi.com . For Retinascan, he chose three beautiful ambient works, the reminded me personally of one of my early faves, Brian Eno, who somehow defined this music clearly in the early 80ies and seems to have been almost the only one who safely shipped round the cliffs of greasy new-ageism in that days. Borghi follows this example, adding a personal stamp of lowercase elements to the sound. One of the most advanced recordings on Retinascan so far and maybe a bit outstanding, but definitely worth a little label incoherence. |

CD-R(2004) from Retinascan
|
The second CD of the hardest working man of the Lithuanian art scene is again a remarkable collection of physical noisework and post-industrial soundscapes, maybe a bit easier accessible than the first, but still a huge big block of waves and frequencies, of which some originate from the mysterious yet very interesting marufura fufunjiru. Toni Dimitrov from acidfake delivered the nice artwork, making this once again a fine collaboration within the Retinascan community. |

Render Perfect Sound
kozo ikeno
re42
CD-R(2004) from Retinascan
|
Kozo Ikeno from Tokyo, Japan is what can be called a "real" musician. Having released on such fine jazz labels like Braxtone (that shouldn't be judged by its website), and working in many different music fields (see his "Overlook" release on Stasisfield), developing a Davisesque smoothness in timbre and phrasing. However, these days Kozo Ikeno has reached the upside down world of Retinascan. "Render Perfect Sound" was recorded on the seaside, with just a plain stereo mic and a trumpet, and apart from all the noises that have become part of the composition, Ikenos play is incredibly vital and seems to search for a virginity that may have got lost in the jazz routine (who knows). In 42 short sketches he forms an all new style of environmental trumpet improvisation without example. Retinascan is really proud to be the label that was picked to present this experience, and we hope you will have as much fun as us and our friends that were forced to listen to this album whenever they visited our bureau within the last weeks. |

sysExbugFix
re43
CD-R(2004) from Retinascan
|
Listening to sysExbugFixs music for the first time was a real mindblower. Despite of the obvious simplicity in arrangement the tracks show a stunning depth comparable to the static moredimensional appeal of phoenelais songs. The collection presented here is a selection of his beatless tracks, featuring a preferrably dark and mysterious, yet abstract atmosphere, rounded up by the brilliant non-standard artwork of bacalao. |

cryptic scenery
re44
CD-R(2004) from Retinascan
|
The release of "Simrishamn" took a long long time since Christian Sotemann, meanwhile only remaining member of cryptic scenery had the recordings in the drawer since end of 2002. It breathes the same air as "The Singing Machine", the 3inch that introduced this outstanding musician to the visitors of Retinascan, but infiltrates the soothing guitar play of Sotemann with his simple yet very effective piano sketches, that may some of you remember of Keith Jarretts more meditative works. Special packaging artwork this time comes from Nele Jamin, a painter from Osnabruck whose work already has been appreciated outside the musical context for quite a while now. |

fragile balance
omnid
re48
CD-R(2005) from Retinascan
|
The semiacademic laptop scene in the USA has gained quite some attention in the past few years. People like Kim Cascone or Akira Rabelais were signed in Germany with music, that fitted the receptional pattern of the clicks and cuts posse. At the same time, the microsound mailing list, maintained by Cascone himself, often supported the impression, that the surface of lowercase could be easily reproduced just by working with the right programs. Dozens of epigones roam in the net, producing gigabytes of material that seems maybe shiny but completely contentless, especially if the underlying concept is not communicated.@When Omnid sent his first demo in late 2002, I was equally sceptical about his work.. what I heard was stubborn and uneasy. Pink noise was (and is) a main element of his music. Nonetheless, his sound had strong characteristics that weren't to find somewhere else, and the deeper one gets into it and the more you get to know the corpus of Omnid's work, the more impressing it is to see how consequently Albert Casais follows his idea of a certain sound and how recognisable this idea is throughout all of his releases. Fragile Balance is as well adding to this chain as pointing over it by the use of generic source material from Omnids own guitar play. Also, the brittle flow of sound has been refined to a rough wild beauty, that remains in the head for far longer than the hour that the release lasts. This makes "Fragile Balance" a climax within the releases Omnid presented so far and a worthy fourth part of the DVD case series on Retinascan. If you want to read more about Omnid, his label SPRC and his vision of sound, just visit the magazine pages. |

kapotte muziek
re50
CD-R(2005) from Retinascan
|
Retinascan is proud to present a re-release of the last work of kapotte muziek as a studio project. Formerly brought to you by Fencing Flatworm (R.I.P.). It is the final installment of a project started in 1987. A newspaper article said that recent research learned that during an operation a patient is not completely unconscious. During the period that a patient is 'slamed' the body is inactive and so are large parts of the brain. One of the organs which remains active during that period is the acoustic organ. Unconsious patients are able to hear sounds from for instance the operating theatre. When they have awaken they cannot remember what exactly they did hear. Additional tests proved they did not remember, not even under a state of hypnosis. Kapotte Muziek, a long-term project more than a band, including several and changing members around Frans de Waard, mastermind of Beequeen also and the person behind the much respected "Vital Weekly" newsletter try to take the opportunity to make a kind of sound which is intruding into the unconscious of an anaestesized mind and is able to help with the healing process already during an operation. THe CD-R consists of one 40+ minute track, comes in a transparent DVD box as part five of the lowercase series and incorporates extended linernotes |

3''CD-R(2005) from Retinascan

Kazuya Ishigami, also known as "DARUIN" is one of the top notch artists in the japanese digital noise business; despite of his extent touring and performing all around the globe, he still finds time to drive his label neus318 sporting noise recordings of all kind, may it be subtle, harsh or improvised. Between all these poles, Ishigami has managed to find an own language, a sound that doesn't give up harmonics, breathes through organic changes but always stays edgy enough to not tumble into the pit of plain drone. The 5th release in the noise smalls series is also connected to a distro deal with Retinascan and you will soon be able to find more of the neus318 sound in our shop. Welcome the Japanese invasion! |

Havens
ENCOMIAST
BLISS09
CD-R from CRUCIAL BLAST
|
This disc contains three exquisite new driftworks from ENCOMIAST, entitled Havens. Formed from vaporous clouds of guitar, gamelan, shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute), violin, vina, voice, flute, and field recordings, Ross Hagen and Megan Garland have stretched these sounds into infinite ribbons of metallic shimmer, twisting and swirling into gorgeous hum. The three tracks on this disc are extended works that range from eleven to twenty-five minutes in length, and drifts within the angelic regions between Andrew Chalk's minimalist explorations, the dream music of Troum (and their predecessor, Maeror Tri), and the bleary melodic smear of My Bloody Valentine. Havens distills the bliss of deep dreams and early morning haze into captured hymns, and is one of ENCOMIAST's finest drone offerings to date.Packaged in a hand-assembled, full-color cardsleeve in a resealable plastic sleeve. Presented in an edition of 250 copies. |

AIDAN BAKER
BLISS10
CD-R from CRUCIAL BLAST
|
Periodic features two lengthy new elemental droneworks from Canadian guitar deconstructionist Aidan Baker (also of NADJA), Periodic 1 (29:55) and Periodic 2 (26:32). Baker constructed these pieces from manipulated and damaged 4-track recordings of electric and acoustic guitars (as well as drums) that have been re-assembled into monstrously slow-moving epics of rolling feedback tides. Incandescent storm clouds gather in the distance flecked with shafts of pink light and omnipresent tape hiss shot from pulsating and rippling speaker cones suspended high in the earth's atmosphere. Deeply buried drum rhythms surface amdist gradually building layers of delicate, gossamer skree and subterranean grinding. A beautiful and fully realized drone album, highly recommended to fans of Aidan Baker's work, as well as that of fellow drift explorers Oren Ambarchi, Troum, and Birchville Cat Motel.Packaged in a hand-assembled, full-color cardsleeve in a resealable plastic sleeve. Presented in an edition of 250 copies, hand numbered. |

CD from CRUCIAL BLAST
|
Spaceheater/Perfect Interior collects the first two EP's from husband-and-wife duo the GOSLINGS, originally released as short-run CD-Rs on low-fi/indie noise imprint Asaurus Records in 2003-2004. Working with a signature palette of melted,low-fi indie pop and muggy/smeared psych-drone ambience ground through overdriven amplifiers and shot out into pools of swirling basement shudder, The GOSLINGS adorn their gorgeous powermurk with eerie field recordings, ghostly subterranean vocals, and crackling cable buzz.If SUNN O))) had, in actuality, been a late-80's dreampop outfit on 4AD Records, or if cult shoegazers MEDICINE had ever collaborated with drone-axe sorcerers EARTH, the resulting fug may have been similiar to this black-sugar avalanche. Simultaneously ethereal and blown-out,angelic strains of four-track mud-majesty shaking the walls of the ancient well it's buried beneath. |

AD LUX TENEBRAE
AB-21
CDR from Abgurd Subdivision

The first official release of Ural project AD LUX TENEBRAE (TOWARDS THE LIGHT OF DARKNESS) consists of recordings made during "That Autumn". The main style of ALT's playing is shamanic, ritual Drone/Dark Ambient, performed (mostly) & fixed with improvised means in a hut in the midst of Ural forest. Some tracks can be a perfect soundtrack for `The Blair Witch Project` movie. ALT uses hand-made instruments - a violin with springs instead of strings, which is played with a bow of steel - field recordings, fixed in the forests, swamps and villages of Ural. Harp, acoustic & bass guitars, vocals & voices, as well as old recordings with folk-songs of Bashkir nation were used. Very potent & original album with strong taste of muskarine, fragrance of autumn forest and fierceful mesmerism. Edition: 132 copies. Cardboard sleeve. Ink-jet printed CD-r. |

This CD-r presents early recordings of well-known Italian Death Ambient project "URNA". Music of those days differs from the sounds you can hear on CD-rs released by Slaughter Productions - it is harsher, rawer & has a unique primeval mood. Bells, singing bowls, deviant shrieks & moanings, raped classical melodies & organ masses wrap you into a rotting cerement of pestilential Danse Macabre. The CD-r contains `Templum sub Terra` MC (released by O.O.D. in 1999) & part of split-MC with LESCH-NYHAN SINDROME. Also, a CD-r with 4 unreleased tracks of the same era goes as a bonus for the first 50 copies of the release. All the tracks are remastered by 121 of VELEHENTOR. Edition: 250 copies in a mini DVD-box. |
